With the right care your necklace keeps its first-day shine for years. Here is everything you need to know.
The golden rule: last on, first off
Put your necklace on at the very end of getting ready, and take it off as soon as you get home. Perfume, hairspray, cream and make-up wear down the surface and speed up tarnishing.
Keep away from water
Remove your necklace before showering, swimming in the sea or a pool. Chlorine and salt water damage plating, and soap residue causes dullness. Wipe with a soft cloth after a sweaty workout.
Cleaning
Wipe gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For light tarnish on silver, a dedicated silver cloth works well. Never use abrasive cleaners, toothbrushes or chemicals on gold-plated pieces — they strip the plating.
Storage
Store each necklace separately in its own velvet pouch so pieces do not scratch each other and chains do not tangle. Closing the pouch reduces contact with air and slows tarnishing. Keep in a cool, dark place away from humidity.
Natural stones and pearls
Pearls and natural stones are more delicate. Never expose them to chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. Wipe only with a slightly damp soft cloth and let them dry fully before storing.
